Who is Rudi Lickwood?

.

As the top black comedian on the UK comedy circuit, Rudi Lickwood is far more than just a stand-up comedian. At the forefront of a movement now breaking into the mainstream and working closely with Combined Forces Entertainment (CSE), Rudi has toured in Afghanistan, Iraq and Bosnia, confounding his belief of spreading comedy to those it can help the most. Lickwood’s influence in the industry has not just been recognised recently though, as the first black comedian on the ‘Stand up Show’, Rudi has been grabbing headlines from the word go. With additional projects such as the ‘Comedy School’ where Rudi performed at comedy workshops in prisons across the UK, it’s clear Rudi’s as committed as ever to the projects and work he believes in. In recognition of this in 2004 Rudi received the prestigious honour of the BECA comedy award for outstanding contribution to comedy

   My personal history:

At school I was never beaten up or had to fend off bullies with jokes! No no no I was the guy who could get you beaten up by bullies. Yes!  Teachers saw me as the child who kept everyone in place especially if there was a football match in the play ground that I didn't want to miss.

By being suspended from school every term since joining secondary school I was quickly introduced too street life and institutional racism.

I hated Air fix models because my models never came out anything like the pictures on the box cover. A bit like having all the answers to a piece of home work then having your dad offering to give a hand and getting all the answers wrong.

Here I stand

Hailing from North West London, Rudi who has been on the comedy circuit for 12 years says his biggest inspiration comes from his children and the late Pan Africanist Marcus Garvey. “A lot of the things I say are with reference to making society a better place for my children to operate in. It is important for them to understand that they are capable of achieving whatever they set their minds to achieve.  To learn how to be decision makers. As well as making people laugh, my big thing is to wake people up through comedy. To make people realise that the only thing getting in their way is themselves

My job is to create excitement laughter a good time a place where comedy is not necessarily a distraction from the cruel reality of life but more a magnified ridiculed reflection

Lickwood makes people laugh wherever he goes, whether nationally or internationally. He's done stints entertaining the blue chip corporate clients cruise ships round the Mediterranean & Caribbean, and warm-up slots for TV shows such as the Weakest Link and Goodness Gracious Me. performing to his own children though has proved to be a terrible disaster. (Hard to believe, huh?)
